Cinematographer Matthias Pilz’s feature The Miner premiered internationally at the Warsaw Film Festival recently. The film is based on true events and was directed by Hanna Slak. It is also Slovenia’s entry into the Academy Awards this year.
The film explores events that unfolded when an immigrant Miner discovers thousands of bodies that were dumped in a pit in the mine around WWII. When the Miner suggests a memorial is held for the unidentified victims, he subsequently risks his job, the wellbeing of his family and, it transpires, his own life.
This is Matthias’ 2nd feature after A Patch Of Fog directed by Michael Lennox.
