Director Hanna Slak gave DoP Matthias Pilz a shout out when discussing her feature The Miner in Cineuropa this week.
“I thought that the style of the director of photography, Matthias Pilz, with his understated camera that gets very intimate, warm and physical with the characters, could potentially suit the setting of a mine very well.”
The film was Slovenia’s entry into the Academy Awards this year and explores events that unfolded when an immigrant Miner discovers thousands of bodies that were dumped in a pit in the mine around WWII. When the Miner suggests a memorial is held for the unidentified victims, he subsequently risks his job, the wellbeing of his family and, it transpires, his own life.
