Directed by Oscar winning Waad Al-Kateab (For Sama), Feature Documentary We Dare to Dream is currently on the festival circuit and had its World Premiere at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival.
Cinematography by Franklin Dow, We Dare to Dream is voiced by John Legend and follows “complete access to the IOC Refugee Olympic Team which were part of the Tokyo Olympics.”
The New Arab: “Waad Al-Kateab made her name in the cinematic landscape because of her deeply personal portrait of life, love and trauma during the Syrian Civil War.
For Sama documents five years of her survival during the uprising in Aleppo and, with the help of director Edward Watts, she turned her footage into an Oscar-nominated and BAFTA award-winning documentary.“
“Now Al-Kateab has set her camera lens on similarly displaced individuals, though these subjects are striving to compete at the highest levels of athletic competition, with Angelina Jolie as executive producer.”
Digitial Journal: “The film follows the story of refugee athletes from Iran, Syria, South Sudan, and Cameroon who swim, run and fight their way to opportunity and safety in host nations across the world.
It features powerful personal stories of displacement, resilience and triumph; moreover, it reveals the lives and hopes of refugee athletes training to compete on the world stage, showing the fire and the drive of young people forced to leave their families, homes and countries of birth to build new lives out of nothing.
The film sheds lights on some important issues (such as upholding the rights and dignity of refugees), and it seeks to lift up people from all around the globe.”
